Photography Classes

We offer different photography classes each season dealing with the key elements of photography.  We have introductory classes aimed at beginners; those classes provide a very gentle overview of all aspects of photography in a 1 to 2 hour lecture.  Intermediate classes help beginners to understand the basics of photography (lighting, equipment, composition) and are also helpful to those who wish to become better photographers.  Some of the advanced classes can also be taken by beginners once they have some experience in photography.  Advanced techniques, such as understanding aperture, shutter speed, and exposure are useful for those who wish to advance beyond the "point-and-shoot" style of photography. If the weather cooperates, we frequently head outside to photograph in the Gardens for an hour or so after each class.

Photography Workshops

We are currently offering two workshops in 2008.

We are working to develop two additional workshops, one tentatively scheduled for the Labor Day weekend (August 30-September 1, 2008) and the other for the Veterans Day weekend (November 8-11, 2008).  Current thinking is to hold an event on the Eastern Shore of Maryland over Labor Day and possibly a fall foliage event over the Veterans Day weekend.  Details will be posted as soon as arrangements can be finalized.

STUDIO LIGHTING & POSING - FUTURE CLASSES

The first workshop at the Digipixart Studio in the Pan Am Plaza, 3085 Nutley Street, Fairfax, VA - 22031 (tel: 703-426-5100) was very successful. Each student attending the workshop gained first-hand experience with studio lighting, posing, and  photographing models with their own camera.

Future classes will require a minimum/maximum of 4 students (to allow each student 30 minutes to photograph the different models).  If you are interested, please send me an email and I'll put your name on a waiting list.  Once I have 4 students, we can scheduled another class.

The Studio Lighting and Posing Workshop costs $100.

You will also need to choose the best/worst images you took for the critique session that takes place on Sunday.

You'll have lunch (included in the price) and then will have your next class, followed by a photo session in the Gardens.  The day will end with an overview of what was learned and a critique of your work by Corey Hilz.

We will break the group into two sessions (maximum of 10 persons) and you will have the option to begin with either a 9:00 AM class or a 10:00 AM class, offered by Mark DiLallo, a local bird photographer with tips on how to take great bird photos.  At 10:00 AM the first group will head outside to photograph live hawks and owls while the second group will begin their class.  At 11:00 AM the second class will have a change to photograph these living raptors for an hour. We charge $25 for this optional session with all proceeds going to help support these injured raptors.

Individual or Group Tutoring

Busy?  It might be best to receive individual instruction on how to effectively use a specific camera, to prepare for a trip, or other photographic requirement. Sometimes clubs or other groups would enjoy listening to a specific presentation at Meadowlark or their own facility.

William B. Folsom or Corey Hilz are available for instruction for individuals or groups interested in personalized photography instruction. Instruction can cover topics listed in class descriptions or can be tailored to the students specific requirements (sufficient time must be allowed).

You will need to contact one of the instructors to schedule an appointment. Cost is $50.00 for a half an hour critique.
