TRAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
PHOTOGRAPHS OF TRAINS

Train photography has long been popular with train buffs,
especially photographs of steam locomotives.
Photographing trains is an enjoyable hobby of mine and one that has slowly
generated a small collection of images of restored trains.
Unfortunately, there are NO HISTORICAL photographs in my
collection of train photographs

Photographic coverage includes:

The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Museum has one of the best collections of railroad
memorabilia in the world. Inside the Roundhouse you'll
find a Clinchfield RR No. 1, a post-Civil War engine
that is the oldest locomotive in service. See photographs
of the famous Chessie "Sleeping Kitten" logo, the "Big Hook"
crane used to remove train wrecks. The American Freedom
Train #1 is on display. The C&O No. 1309 is the last
domestic steam engine build by the Baldwin Locomotive Works
in 1949. The C&O 490 was the most advanced steam locomotive
built in America and was the last attempt to beat the entry
of diesels into America's railroads.

The Durango & Silverton narrow-guage railroad that operates
in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado provides a recent
look at the old trains that once served the southwestern part
of Colorado, carring silver ore and freight.

The Roanoke Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia
is another key source of photographs in this collection of
trains. Coverage includes a #4 Virginian Heavy 8-wheel
switcher from 1910;
a Norfolk & Western GM freight locomotive,
a Chesapeake & Ohio GE Diesel/Electric,
and a Pennsylvania RR Electric.

The Essex Steam Train Museum in Essex, Connecticut
provides access to the Valley Railroad Company
and the steam locomotives that run The Connecticut Valley Line.
There are several operational locomotives that depart from Essex
during the summer months along with examples of other railroad gear and
equipment, including the Canadian Pacific locomotive No. 1246.

The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in Cass, West Virginia
gave me the chance to photograph a lumber mill switchback
train under beautiful blue skies and green woodlands.
The old railroad station is fun for families interested in the
thrill of riding the rails in a fire-breathing locomotive.

I had a chance to ride aboard the Oak Ridge Limited, a Norfolk
and Western Class J 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive on one of its last
runs between Manassas and Oak Ridge, Virginia.

In addition to these historic trains, I have photographed
Amtrak trains, including the new Genesis Series diesel locomotive,
the AMD-103, built by General Electric during a trial
run on May 22, 1994. Other operating trains include the Norfolk
Southern, the Southern Pacific, and CSX.

My images include a Ferrocarriles del Estado, taken in the
southern-most train station in the world -- in Puerto Montt, Chile.
This contrasts against some of my photographs of the
equipment used to blow snow off the rails in Alaska.

I even have a few photographs of trolly cars,
taken at the Connecticut and Maryland Trolly Museums,
which feature DC Transit trolly cars
and a trolly cars from other cities.

If you need images of trains, my collection might just have
what you need.
